Japanese-Made vs Chinese-Made Mushroom Supplements: What Matters More Than Origin
Many people in Japan assume a Japanese-made mushroom supplement is the safer choice. In short, origin alone doesn't tell you the quality. Whether a product is made in Japan or China, the part of the mushroom used, the extraction method and how much information is disclosed all vary from product to product. This page sets out what to check, including origin.
Short answer
- Country of origin is only one factor in quality.
- On the label, check the country of origin, the part used (fruiting body or mycelium), the extraction method and the manufacturing standards.
- A product that discloses these details specifically is easier to compare than one that only says "made in Japan".
Five things to check
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Country of origin and manufacture | Are the countries for the raw material and for manufacturing both stated? "Manufactured in Japan" (国内製造) does not mean the raw material is Japanese. |
| Part used | Fruiting body (the mushroom itself) or mycelium (sometimes with its substrate). See the difference |
| Extraction | Ground powder or extract? If extracted, is the method (hot water, alcohol) stated? |
| Stated amounts | Is the daily amount given, along with stated compounds such as beta-glucan? |
| Manufacturing | Is the factory certified (for example GMP)? |
Where Kinkatsudo's products come from
Kinkatsudo's products are made in China, both the raw materials and manufacturing. The Lion's Mane is grown in Zhejiang Province and the Cordyceps militaris in Fujian Province. The capsules are made in a GMP-certified facility, and orders ship from within Japan.
Kinkatsudo is not a Japanese-made product. Instead, we state the part used, the extraction method and the compound content specifically on each product page.
- Lion's Mane Extract Capsules: 100% fruiting body, no mycelium or grain, dual-extracted with hot water and alcohol, 30% or more beta-glucan, 120 capsules (about 60 days)
- Cordyceps Extract Capsules: Cordyceps militaris fruiting bodies grown indoors without insects, hot-water extracted, 30% or more beta-glucan, 60 capsules (about 30 days)
FAQ
Is a Japanese-made supplement better quality?
Not necessarily. Origin is one piece of information; compare the part used, the extraction method and the manufacturing standards as well.
Is "manufactured in Japan" the same as "Japanese raw materials"?
No. A product made in a Japanese factory can use imported raw materials. Check the origin of the raw material and the place of manufacture separately.
Are products made in China safe?
It is more realistic to judge each product by how it is made than by country. Check whether the factory is certified and what the seller discloses.
